Vogtlandbahn RegioSprinter DMU in Karlovy Vary Hlavni Nadrazi |
Description: |
This is one of the Seimens RegioSprinter DMUs used by Vogtlandbahn for cross -border services between Germany and the Czech Republic, particularly the Northwest of the Czech Republic. I wasnt expecting to see one of these, but given where Karlovy Vary is I shoumdnt have been surprised. |

MUS Coal Train, Picture 2 Edited Version |
Description: |
This coal train, headed by a Class 127 electric locolotive, is dedicated soley to the MUS mining railway. The 127 Class is exclusive to this line and the SU mining railway in Sokolova, as it runs on 1,500v DC current,#and is dedicated solely to heavy freight service, with a maximum speed of only 65Km/h (40 m.p.h.). Power is surprisingly low, at only 2,937 horsepower (2,190Kw). This rail line carries lignite from the surrounding mines, which are among the only coal mines still active in Bohemia. They've been so active historically, in fact, that numerous towns dnd villages, and even the city centre of Most, have been destroyed by strip mining and subsidence. The world record was set for the largest building relocated on wheels, when the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was moved from the original Most centre to the new one in 1975. See these links for more details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Assumption_of_the_Virgin_Mary_+Most) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most |

Marianske Lazne, Picture 2 Edited Version |
Description: |
Heres a much%better view of Nadrazi Marianske Lazne, with its 19th-Century Austrian architecture. The station may have always been bigger than it needed to be, and today its absolutely immense, not that thats a bad thing for the future, when oil prices will skyrocket. |

Nadrazi Marianske Lazne, Edited Version |
Description: |
My next trip was a natural follow-up to my Karlovy Vary trip. Both Karlovy Vary, or Carlsbad, and Marianske Lazne, or Marienbad, became popular tourist ddstinations in the 19th Century due to their mineral water springs, which were thought to have curative effects. If youre just interested in a city trip to see interesting buildings, Marianske Lazne may be the more interesting of the two cities, as its hotels and restaurants, most of which are of late 19th-and-early-20th-Century vintage represent some of the most attrabtive buildings of that period. This is the train station, of course, but here we only see the canopy (admittedly steam-era), and the train that I came on. |

Trutnov Hlavni Nadrazi |
Description: |
This is Trutnov Hlavni Nadrazi in Trutnov, where I had gone in an attempt to attend the Trutnov Open Air Music Festival. The Trutnov festival is an annual mainstream rock festival with hippie roots that was one of the first to start up after the Velvet Revolution. I ended up skipping it in the end in spite of having bought the train ticket, as it was overcrowded, secured like a prison (meaning that if there wasnt any place to camp, I would be stuck there with no place to sleep), and the security looked intrusive and hostile. By managing it like Woodstock 99, they lost the large ticket price that I could have paid them, and I ended up spending the day photographing the city of Trutnov. Trutnov isnt a bad place to sightsee, after all, as it dates to the 12th Century, and features many preserved buildings from the Baroque period and earlier. |

Nadrazi Hostivice |
Description: |
Hostivice is a suburb of Prague, and is one of the stations on the way to Kladno, where there is a small airport. The line is unelectrified, so most of the services are either Class 854 DMUs, like the one I rode, or Class 810 railbuses, seen here. |

Masarykovo Nadrazi |
Description: |
One of the many Prague buildings undergoing restoration recently has been Masarykovo Nadrazi. This is the oldest surviving railway station in the city, built in 1845 (the original Dejvice would rival it, having been built even earlier for a horsedrawn tramway). I took this cameraphone shot right after they pulled the scaffolding off of the restored, repainted trainshed, which extends forward to the street. |

Regiojet Train in Praha-Smichov |
Description: |
In 2011, some intercity services were outsourced to Regiojet, a TOC owned and operated by the Student Agency, who had for a number of years run a bus service from Brno to London via Prague. Im waiting to see what I really think of this, but I find it irritating that, supposedly, they dont take regular CD tickets, thus tying up train paths while offering a service (with their tickets) only a few times a day. Its the worst of both worlds in that regard. One of my colleagues praised this arrangement for encouraging competition, but this is a bit like praising competition between your doctor and your dentist in the same office, not in that their roles are the same, but in that if you see one you cant see the other, and if you need one you dont need the other. Competition in that case only makes it more difficult to get an appointment. Actually, the train is worse because you need it far more often. |
