Spic and Span |
Description: |
As has been plainly evident since the first orders of rebuilds started hitting the rails in 2018, they accumulate dust and oil streaks quickly, so there's a very limited window of opportunity to get them looking like this! This may well be only the second revenue trip for 8209 and 8208, the first being the previous day's 288. Notice the dust/mud already apparent on the plow/undercarriage, although nothing above the sill stripe...yet. It also appears they didn't bother to paint the exhaust vents on this order, since it was getting cooked off within weeks. |

Go Big Red |
Description: |
Title refers to a cheer said by fans of UW-Madison's Badgers, but could also refer to traveling by a big, bright red train such as CP 8209 (and its sequential sister 8208) on the point of westbound manifest No. 287, here changing crews at the Portage yard office. |

287 On The Pull |
Description: |
Following the crew change, they started rolling west on the main. Thinking they were blasting off, I hightailed it to a crossing west of town but waited over half an hour. They must have shoved in at Three Light to work the yard. The scanner was unusually quiet, I never heard them tone up the Wisconsin Dispatcher on 161.520 for signal indication. Also, normally if a westbound is going to work the yard it will either take the siding or cross over at the junction and go in from the east end. |

New Number, Same Dingy GEs |
Description: |
This is my first encounter with CP train 247...but not really. It's the new (since late March) symbol for 281, the regular Bensenville-St. Paul manifest. The CN unit and the SD40-3 second and third out add some interest, but the leader manages to be particuarly unattractive with its large scorch mark obfuscating the long hood text. |

CP 5108 third out on 247 with engine room door open |
Description: |
One of a small group of SD40-2s rebuilt to "SD40-3" in late 2017/early 2018 and renumbered. They were some of the first units to receive the "Golden Beaver" scheme upon its reintroduction. They were intended for yard service and received features such as the strobe lights accordingly. The Canadian-style bells mounted between the numberboards were also removed and replaced with electronic bells in the typical underframe location (visible just above and to the right of the front truck), but the empty mounts were left. To my pleasant surprise, this was not done to the recent SD40-2 repaints such as 6025 and 5973. Fourth time I've seen this unit since April 2018, always trailing on a westbound manifest. |
