Album Info:Here are two original photos that I took of the "Magna Carta Special" at the Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Mr. Morton S. Smith ~ PRR's Regional Vice-President ~ addressed a small crowd at the Station about the need for a "Magna Carta" for American Railroads. Issues that he spoke about included the need for equal regulation for all freight and passenger carriers, the right of railroads to diversify their revenue portfolios, and the need to end government subsidies for competing transport modes. * Restored Album *

PRR "Magna Carta Special," #2 of 2, 1961
Title:  PRR "Magna Carta Special," #2 of 2, 1961
Description:  Magna Carta. Here is the second of two original successive photos that I took of the "Magna Carta Special" at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Prominent here is Mr. Morton J. Smith, a regional vice president of the PRR. Speaking from the open platform of his business car, the "Pittsburgh," he's advocating for: (1) equal regulation parity between railroads and other transportation modes; (2) the right of railroads to diversify into other types of business; and (3), an end to de facto governmental subsidies for other means of transportation (e.g., free interstate highways and airports built with public monies).
