Home of the Admirals |
Description: |
Farragut, Iowa "The Home of the Admirals", is a small town of about 400 in the southwest part of the Hawkeye State. This is the end of what's left of the BN branch from Red Oak. Originally the line used to run to the Council Bluffs-Kansas City line at Hamburg under the Burlington Route; a mixed-train ran the line into the late 1950s, giving the locals at least some passenger service. The part west of here was abandoned in stages from 1961 to 1971. Although the tracks are still in to Shenandoah (about six miles down these tracks) it doesn't look like many trains make it this far any more. |

UP Local At Gowrie |
Description: |
HELM 347 leads a two-unit local with UP 368 at Gowrie Iowa on a hot summer day. At one time the small town of Gowrie had seven lines from four roads radiating out of it. It's now down to the a single through path, the north/south route that was once part of the M&StL. The old east/west CNW tracks survive from here to serve elevators. Grain and ethynol appears to make up most of the traffic these days. |

Matched GEs at Burlington |
Description: |
We're at Burlington Iowa, as the"hotel in the background would seem to indicate, as a matched pair of BNSF B70-8Ws idle to themselves with a short train. |
