Russian Decapod |
Description: |
At the request of the Czarist Russian government, ALCO built around a thousand of these light weight Decapods during WWI. Around 800 had been delivered before the Bolshevik revolution when deliveries ceased, leaving 200+ engines in the US. The USRA took them and distributed them to various railroads. Six examples still survive today, with Frisco 1630 at IRM being the "live one". |

Station |
Description: |
The exact date of this photo is unknown, however, that IS a 1935 Ford Phaeton sitting there, and the double track STILL extends west of the station. The line west of here was single-tracked about 1940, so it's got to be sometime between 1935 and 1940. We are looking west on the New Haven's Highland division between Willimantic and Waterbury. |

NH I-4 Pacific pauses at Plainville with a westbound passenger train, probably sometime just prior to WW2. Exact date unavailable. The single track crossing at grade is the old New Haven & Northampton, aka the "Canal Line". Except for about 1 mile north and a couple miles south of here, the Canal is all but extinct. |
