GE/ALCO/EMD Power Climbing Morrison's Hill |
Description: |
An "Up" train is headed east out of Cootamundra while it works 17KM (10.5 miles) of roughly 1.3% grade to Morrison's Hill. The wide variety of power found in Australia is demonstrated in this picture; up front is GL-class unit GL-106, which was built as a 442-class with an Alco prime mover and subsequently re-built with a 3000HP GE engine. The second unit is 869, a 40+ year-old Goodwin/Alco DL-531, (South Australia RY 830-class) a roughly 1000HP unit still earning its keep. Last is an RL-class unit, built in 2005 with a 3500HP EMD 645 power plant. GL-106 is painted for lessor CFCL-A while the two trailers are in Coote Industrial green and yellow. |

Goodwin/Alco DL-531 |
Description: |
The Goodwin/Alco DL-531 is one of Australia's most important locomotive designs, having been built in large numbers (210) and proving useful for a multitude of duties. Most were built for New South Wales RY in the 48-class; a smaller number went to South Australia RY, where they were the 830-class. Built from 1959 to 1970, they carry a 6-251 engine rated at 950HP for traction. 833, shown here, was built for the SA Ry and is now stored in poor shape off the Cootamundra turntable. |

Cootamundra New South Wales sits in the middle of the state's most productive wheat growing region. It's yard is usually full of power, particularly when grain is moving. Here two Pacific National grain trains sit in the town's yard awaiting movement south. The 81-class is similar mechanically to an American SD40-2 with a 3000HP EMD 645 engine inside. They're fairly common in New South Wales, with 84 being built. |

The Manildra Group ("The Gem of the West") operates a number of grain elevators in New South Wales with at least nine units to work them. Rated at 650HP with a Caterpillar engine, they were retired from railroad service from 1987, although quite a few went to industrial use, like this one. |

True Blue Aussie Alco: Pacific National 48-Class 4898 |
Description: |
The 48-class locomotive is considered one of the most important diesels in Australian rail history. Goodwin/Alco built 165 of the type from 1959 to 1970 for New South Wales RR and 45 of the virtually identical 830-class for South Australian RR. The type worked in all varieties of service, but are best known for their work on grain branchlines, where they replaced steam. Roughly 80 of both class remain in service and a small number are being rebuilt in places like Junee for continued duty. PNR 4898, former NSWR 4898, Goodwin/Alco 1966. 900HP Alco model DL-531. |

Helga |
Description: |
Among Australia's oddest locomotives is a group of former Danish State RR MZ-class units. 16 of the early-70s units were brought into the country in 2007-08 and are operated by the Independent Railways of Australia. 14 survive and work in New South Wales where railfans have taken to calling them "Helgas". Not so odd are their internals, which are very similar to EMD's SD45; with 20-cylinder 3600HP 645 power plants. 1434 is shown here sitting by the depot at Goulburn. |
