C&O 500, steam-turbine-electric
Title:  C&O 500, steam-turbine-electric
Description:  This photo was a gift to me, given many years ago. Original photographer and other data unknown. The notes on the back say that the photo was taken in "March 1948" (I guessed at a date--this was several years before I was born! My parents were still in high school at this time!) at Clifton Forge, VA "on the mainline". I don't know if C&O gave these three engines (500-502, Baldwin 1947) any names but "Jawn Henry" was a completely different steam turbine built for Norfolk and Western.

Title:  C&O 2300, partial conductor's side view
Description:  C&O 2300 led a westbound freight into the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV sometime in June or July 1978. I don't remember the exact date. This is one of the first train pictures I ever took, using a Kodak 126 "Brownie" camera. Note the EMD trucks, the bell behind the cab, and the three forward facing air horns.

Description:  C&O 5701 was in the former C&O yards at Huntington, WV, on an unknown date in 1979 or 1980. Like several early C&O GP7's, this one has the lowered headlights and unusual spark arrestors. 5701 is working a cut of cars, pushing west in the yards near the former DK Cabin.

C&O 2311, engineer's side
Title:  C&O 2311, engineer's side
Description:  C&O 2311 is one of several units leading an eastbound freight past the (former?) Amtrak station, called "Tri-State Station", at Catlettsburg, KY in March 1979; exact date uncertain. Note the brake wheel is on the engineer's side of the short hood; most GE's seemed to have the brake wheels on the brakeman's/conductor's side.

N&W 2570, looking east
Title:  N&W 2570, looking east
Description:  N&W RS-11 was the last one of a multi-unit set on a westbound N&W freight in Ironton, OH. I was on the south side of the tracks, looking north, as this train went by. There were at least 2-3 other EMD units ahead of this Alco. I used a 110-series camera (remember those?) for this photo--didn't have a SLR camera in those days--hence. some of the graininess. At least we have the photo. Date is uncertain. BTW, I used a new Epson scanner with an automatic "color correction" feature, as the original print had faded badly over the years. Notice the extended window on the cab.

N&W 2570, looking west
Title:  N&W 2570, looking west
Description:  N&W RS-11 2570, ex-NKP 570, was the trailing unit on a westbound freight in Ironton, OH in March 1979. Date is uncertain. Note the Roman-style "N&W" lettering, in gold or yellow, on the hood; and the extended windows on the cab. This was one of the few Alco's I ever saw in action. Further, note the relatively clean exhaust--no turbo lag here! BTW, I took this picture using a 110-series camera (remember those?) and used my new Epson scanner's "color correction" feature, as the original print had faded badly over the years. At any rate, we still have the photo and memories even though 2570 may be long gone by now.

C&O 2300, brakeman's side view
Title:  C&O 2300, brakeman's side view
Description:  C&O 2300 was at the C&O yards and division point at Handley, WV in the summer of 1979. Date is frankly a guess, but it was before the U25B's were stricken from the roster--you can't tell it from this cropped photo, but 2300 was coupled to a U25B. Note that it's still in the blue C&O scheme while sister unit 2301, coupled to the short hood, is wearing Chessie System garb.

C&O 2321
Title:  C&O 2321
Description:  C&O 2321 was at the former C&O yards at Handley, WV. Date is uncertain. Unit was coupled to a U25D to the left and was close to a U30B on the right. Unit rode on EMD "Blomberg" trucks. Note the rugged West Virginia hill in the background, actually across the Kanawha River. Apologies for the poor quality as this is an old print.

Title:  C&O 3020, rear section
Description:  This photo shows the fans, handrails, light, and other details of C&O 3020, a GP30 parked in the former C&O yards in Huntington, WV. Something seldom modeled is the "clean" spots on the dirty, grimy ends from train crew climbing up the grab irons, perhaps to add sand (note the "hatch" or lid for the sand container above the double-lights). Date is approximate but I took this photo the same day as the other photo of 3020.

Description:  The Ohio River Co #21 was set up to run long hood forward. This was true of many RS-1's, as I recall. This view shows she "tiger stripes (?)" of yellow or gold on a beautiful dark green background, rather like Rutland or Vermont Ry power. Notice the funnel on the short hood walkway.

KCCX 762, electric locomotive
Title:  KCCX 762, electric locomotive
Description:  KCCX 762, working for Kennecott Copper, was the only electric locomotive I've ever seen. It's working upgrade with a cut of ore cars, literally in the middle of a mountain. I lost count of how many trains, electric- and diesel-powered, were running when I saw this operation. Date is uncertain, but it's probably the summer of 1980 or 1983.

Description:  B&O 4810 was in the deadline at the Chessie System (ex-C&O) shops at Huntington, WV on 12-28-1986. Note the visible engine, the messed-up running boards, missing handrails, and the empty numberboard on the left side. There is a large B&O emblem on the end of the long hood.
