Title:
SLSF 4-8-2 #4404Accident - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Description:
A chilling description of the accident was written on the back of the photo by photographer Arhur B. Johnson. "Frisco 4-8-2 #4404 pulling the "Bluebonnet' #8, Oct 5, 1947 about 4:30am running a little late in heavy fog. Engineer became lost due to fog and didn't know he was on the Nichols curve, which he hit at 60 or more, when it should have been 30 mph. Engine flipped, killing fireman. No passengers hurt. Engine rebuilt & returned to service Dec, 1947."

Title:
SLSF 4-8-2 #4404 Accident - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Description:
A note on the back of the photo states "Frisco 4402 with wrecker at #8 wreck, Nichols, MO, oct 5 1947. Too much speed on curve due to engineer being lost in fog." The accident was definitely a scene of onlookers. How the Frisco shops were able to restore this loco by December of 1947 after this in October of 1947 is miraculous. Arthur B. Johnson photo
