The Class L1 "Mikados" were built in the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA and by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the Lima Locomotive Works. The Juniata shops built 344, Baldwin built 205 and Lima built 25. Only PRR #520 survives at the RR Museum of Pennsylvania. PRR 1348 was built by Baldwin in January of 1916. After a solid history of service for nearly 31 years, it was finally sold for scrap in December of 1957. Specs - L1 class, 62" drivers, 205 spi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylindeers, engine weight of 315,000 lb, tractive effort of 61,465 lb. J.R. Quinn photo |

Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1348, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1916 and retired in December of 1957 after 41 years of faithful service. The names of the photographer and of the Fireman pictured here, as well as the exact date and the location, are not recorded. Produced and distributed by FJC Products of Newport, Delaware. |
