CR 4800, GG-1, 1976 |
Description: |
Old Rivets. Here is a postal card entitled "'Ol' Rivets' gussied-up for Bicentennial." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Called 'Ol' Rivets' because she was the first GG-1 built by the Pennsylvania RR, and the only one with riveted seams. Designer Raymond Loewy called for smooth, welded seams in the subsequent 139 copies. This view is from 1976. She now resides, wearing dignified vintage paint, in a proper museum." The photographer is not identified. #4800 is a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built by General Electric as number "4899" during August of 1934, renumbered "4800" in November of 1934, rated at 4,620 horsepower, and now at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. |

CR GG1 4800 at Harrisburg |
Description: |
Returning from our first trip to Altoona where hundreds of railfans gathered to see Reading 4-8-4 #2101 round Horseshoe Curve, my friend and I came across a gem resting at the Harrisburg engine terminal. CR GG-1 4800 was resting with sister GG-1s and other former PC electrics in her wild Bicentennial paint scheme! Kodachrome 64 film, a guess at exposure time, and station lights for lighting made for an interesting image of "Old Rivets." On April 12, 1976, the Harrisburg paint shop had added the colorful scheme. Sadly, 4800 was the only GG-1 Conrail deemed worthwhile to repaint into full Conrail colors. All of the other almost ageless CR GG-1s remained in grimy black until their retirement in 1979. |

CR GG1 #4800 |
Description: |
Here is slide taken by Conrail conductor Ken Taylor of the famous GG1 #4800 shortly after its retirement and move to the RR Museum of Pennsylvania. Built by GE in August of 1934 as a prototype for the Pennsylvania RR, this loco was originally #4899 but renumbered in November of 1934. It served with distinction throughout is 46 years of service to first PRR, then Penn Central and finally Conrail. After a full cosmetic restoration in 1982 to its 1935 paint scheme, it is now a prominent display inside the museum. According to the museum, this historic loco pulled the first electrically powered trail out of Washington, D.C. and set a speed record at 102 mph. Later it achieved a top speed of 128 mph during braking tests in 1935. It accumulated approximately 5 million miles of service and wore nine different major paint schemes during its lifetime. |
