Work train
Title:  Work train
Description:  In June 1984, there was a washout on the Port Washington Branch about 1/2 mile east of Little Neck, which closed the line for a couple of weeks while the repairs were made. These C 420s brought the work train out and were parked at Douglaston station, a very unusual circumstance. View is from the Douglaston Parkway overpass.

RF 91
Title:  RF 91
Description:  RF 91 was the overnight westbound freight from Pine Aire to Fresh Pond, using the power that had been on RF 63 from Riverhead. Besides doing the road haul, it also worked at Hiucksville and did local switching en route. Tonights train has an MP 15 leading, which occasionally happened if there was not a C 420 ready. Its about 0300, and the train is working the siding east of New Hyde Park on the westbound side, requiring the train to stop in the station while the switch is lined. I took advantage of the stop to get a shot.

RF 62 nears Riverhead
Title:  RF 62 nears Riverhead
Description:  RF 62 is almost to where it will do most of its work today, passing Calverton, one of the more unremarked points on the LIRR. There is not much here at this time, just some relay rail. There was once a station, now long gone. Trains quit stopping here in the 70s.

Working the team track
Title:  Working the team track
Description:  Once a common sight in many towns, the team track had become a rare feature. Riverhead still had one(as did Queens Village, though I dont recall seeing any cars spotted there in the 80s), here being switched by RF 62s C 420s. The crews on this train did not get radios, so hand signals were the standard way for the trainmen to communicate. It was a real lesson in old style railroading.

Farm like scene
Title:  Farm like scene
Description:  The east end was once farm land, but by the late 80s, much of it had been sold off for development as real estate values became greater than the agricultural value. Manorville seemed to have escaped that trend even in the late 80s, as this scene of a red house in a rural setting shows. RF 63 rolls past behind the usual pair of C 420s.

Description:  RF 63 gets ready to go west as it sits in front of what was once one of LIRRs prime traffic sources-the Suffolk Potato Exchange. Eastbound surprise
Title:  Eastbound surprise
Description:  In 1978, the LIRR extended a couple of Ronkonkoma trains to Yaphank in response to the growing traffic as population on Long Island grew. Aside from the benefit to far east end riders, the bonus to fans was that they usually drew a C 420, which was becoming a rare event in those days, as the GP 38s had largely taken over the passenger duties. I caught one at Ronkonkoma, almost close enough to grab it. This was early in my photography career, and I still had a thing or two to learn about composition.

Mid day layovers
Title:  Mid day layovers
Description:  This is not the greatest shot. I probably took it with the 110 Instamatic I was using then, in my early rail photograpy days, but it catches a transitional time on the LIRR. We see an Alco in the MTA blue/yellow scheme from the late 60s with a passenger train, something that would very shortly become a rarity, as the GP 38s had been delivered; an MP 15 poking out behind a train in the center of the photo, probably the only place in America where they were used in passenger service; and two of the aforementioned GP 38s, one at far right, the other just poking a nose out behind the Alco. These units would be hold sway on diesel trains for almost the next 30 years.
