CSX 5409 |
Description: |
I invited my friend John to join me for the day. He has never watched trains on the CSX main before, so he was pretty stoked to join me. I just wished I would have picked a busier day at the rate things were going! When he arrived, we knew we had some traffic coming, but nothing was very close. A M867 had a 43 car drop-off at the SDI siding outside of Saint Joe, so we decided to work our way toward Saint Joe. M867 was going to split their train at INDO then come west for their work, but some eastbound traffic had to get out of the way first. After a decent wait, the lead GEVO on CSX I010 could be heard, and we got our first train of the day together. |

The M867 crossed mains and dipped into the siding at SDI, and another eastbound was cleared up after they cleared. CSX B741 came east with another clean GEVO and a duo of CSX and UP EMDs. Ive always been a bit weary going to the diamond between CSX and NS in Saint Joe, since it is techinically someones driveway. However, John convinced me to let us go down there, as he had never shot trains crossing a diamond before. Sure enough, our entire time down there we were never bothered. |

After I172 cleared, NS L96 got their light to head back west to East Wayne. I was unaware at the time, but repurposed Clinchfield masts installed in the early 2000s were on the signal guarding the connection between CSX and NS. I decided to incorporate that in my photo. Probably the one and only time Ill get this shot, so a first for me on this trip too! |

INER 5903 |
Description: |
CSX went dead once again, and there were posts on Facebook saying that there were new CPKC painted engines leading trains both east and west on the NS Chicago Line. So, the day on CSX ultimately became an afternoon on NS. So, we got on I69 and headed up toward Waterloo. As we exited at Waterloo, I heard over the scanner "INER 5903 departing Pleasant Lake eastbound". With our trains on NS still fairly far away, I called John up and asked him if he wanted to go a bit further north to the INER. He had never shot the INER before, so he gave it the greenlight and we continued north to Ashley. I assumed that the train would beat us to Steubenville before we would get there, so we worked that direction. We went up toward the connection at Steubenville and noticed that an INER truck was parked at the switch, so the train had yet to reach the connection. We moved a crossing to the north, and there was our train. We had expected a normal freight. Well, we were very wrong. They were moving a part of the sanding tower in Pleasant Lake today. The train was shoving from Pleasant Lake to Steubenville, then would pull west toward Hudson. I say we made the right choice coming up here! A couple firsts for both John and I! |

NKP 765 |
Description: |
And just when we thoughts things couldnt get any better, we looked down into the INER yard and noticed that NKP 765 was fired up. The locomotive was slated to lead the first Indiana Rail Experience trips of the year out of Angola that weekend. We decided to wait and see what would happen once the westbound got into the yard. Sure enough, when it cleared up, the crew on NKP 765 began to shove east out of the yard. John had never seen 765 in person before, and the excitement on his face was enough to make my day. We moved into Hudson and grabbed the locomotive slowly shoving east by the "Welcome to Hudson" sign. |

Description: |
Since the locomotive was shoving, it had to stop at every crossing so one of the crew members could hop out and flag the crossings, which made it very easy to get back out ahead of it. Grand Avenue in Ashley was our next shot location. Thanks to colder weather today and strong westerly winds, there was plenty of visible steam and smoke, and it was blowing to the east, so it gave the effect that the locomotive was pulling forward instead of shoving backwards. Strong wind and cold weather sucks, but sometimes it goes in our favor! |

FWRX 358 |
Description: |
We were counting on the locomotive to shove to Steubenville then pull north to Angola to be staged for the runs the following day. However, we were not quite that lucky, as they were just moving the locomotive to Brightmark to fill the tender with water. We went down that direction, and while we were grabbing some shots, we heard "NKP 358 departing Pleasant Lake eastbound". We swore our afternoon on the INER couldnt get better, but it just continued to! We moved to Steubenville, and sure enough, the SD9 was rounding the bend at Steubenville and would pull west to Ashley. We hunkered down on the west side of town and watched the solo locomotive pass the codeline bound for Ashley/Hudson. |

Description: |
It apparently takes much longer to fill a water tender than either of us thought. John wanted to see the locomotive pull, which I dont blame him for, so we decided to go back to Hudson. We waited and waited and waited and waited and nothing ever happened. We missed a number of trains on NS, including NS 1069 leading an eastbound intermodal. But, the waiting did pay off in the end. We decided to move back to Brightmark where we found the crew finishing up filling the tender, and 358 sitting on the other end of the crossing. Once the tender was filled, 765 shoved and hooked onto 358, the began to pull back west toward the yard in Hudson. The locomotive gave off a nice steam show as it slowly pulled away from Brightmark. |

We tried to make a quick dash back into Hudson to catch the train at the location we were sitting at. But, unfortunately for us, a large semi pulled out in front of us coming out of the truck stop along I69. That extra few seconds would have given us a bit more time to set up. We barely made it back into Hudson, and had to settle for the same crossing we shot the locomotive the first time at. And of course, the sun disappeared. But, it still gave a good show as it passed by! |
