UP 6804, UP 7246, UP 6771 |
Description: |
An empty coal train approaches E. Snell Rd. as it heads southwest via CN, former SOO, rails at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jul. '17. Train had 3 locomotives, UP 6804, UP 7246, UP 6771. Train was likely returning from Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI. I captured the same trio of locomotives hauling a northbound loaded coal train at Stroebe, WI on 16 Jul. I was surprised to notice that all three locomotives must have been turned on a wye at some point, all three were cab forward heading north and now they are all cab forward heading south. I was standing at what used to be the former C&NW grade crossing. The border between the City of Oshkosh and the Town of Oshkosh is quite convoluted in this area. The land to the left of the active rails in front of me and the land on both sides of the active rails behind me is the Town of Oshkosh, but the land to the right of the active rails in front of me is the City of Oshkosh. Go about 400' behind me and the land on both sides of the active rails is the City of Oshkosh. |

CN 4705 |
Description: |
CN local passes behind the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jul. '17. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago. |

CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 12 Aug. '17. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. The former SOO main line lies between the train and the highway. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. Train had four locomotives, IC 2720 and CN 5636 leading and CN 5639 and CN 8913 mid-train. |

Description: |
Here is a sharp looking ten wheeler with the white sidewalls built in 1908 by the Montreal Locomotive Works. Originally it was numbered 2614 but in 1913-14 the "26" in the 2600 series was replaced wtih "8" making it #814. Note the stylish conductor with his foot on the pilot. It appears to be a rail fan event. Doug Cummings photo |
