FSF. Here is a photo by Thomas Lynam that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in February of 1949. It was published originally in Mr. Robert L. Emerson's 1984 book entitled "Allegheny Passage: An Illustrated History Of Blair County," page 75. Photo Caption: "The sight of clouds billowing out of a passing steam engine vanished shortly after these two photos were made, as the newer diesel engine edged its older sister out of commission. Both the J-1a steam engine (top) and the EMD diesels (not shown) ~ nicknamed 'covered wagons' ~ were photographed in Altoona's Pennsy yard in 1949." CN 5639 and CN 8913 |
Description: |
CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 12 Aug. '17. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. Train had four locomotives, IC 2720 and CN 5636 leading and CN 5639 and CN 8913 mid-train. |

UP 6845 and UP 8482 |
Description: |
An empty coal train idles away on the CN, former C&NW, siding at Stroebe, WI on 12 Aug. '17. Train was returning from Wisconsin Public Service's Pulliam Power Plant, a.k.a. J. P. Pulliam Generating Station, at Green Bay, WI and had three locomotives, UP 6845 and UP 8482 pulling and UP 6368 pushing. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The train rests amid the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway)/Hwy. 10 interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection). The overpass in the background is the connection from westbound Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) to northbound Hwy. 41. The columns partially visible at left support the new, second bridge to carry eastbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The columns partially visible at right support the original Roland Kampo Bridge (being extensively rebuilt) which will now only carry westbound traffic over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. |

CN local crosses N. Lake St. past Eggers Industries as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 23 Aug. '17. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train was likely returning from Waupaca. |
