Looking eastward towards Lake Superior, you can see the GN interlocking tower at Carlton with the train order signal showing green or Proceed in both directions. You can also see that the eastward home signal is displaying a "High Green" indicating Proceed. The eastward track is red from the many years of iron ore trains that loaded the big boats when they came calling and then tried up alongside the ore docks at Duluth. With maybe 20,000 tons or more of that which was later known as taconite, they traveled the Great Lakes to the steel mills in the east. To the right is the NP depot with not only the line west to Brainerd and Staples, but also the line to Hinckley and St Paul. It was this route south to the Twin Cities that saw passenger service as late as the middle 1960's. The GN passenger trains "the Badger and the Gopher" crossed the NP at Hinckley. This was after traveling across Wisconsin before entering Minnesota where they crossed the Kettle River at Sandstone. |
