Santa Fe F7A #42C (later #310C) is the lead engine for train #2, the eastbound SAN FRANCISCO CHIEF, crossing the Mississippi River at Fort Madison, IA, after having made the station stop there. Taken from the upper deck of the bridge, which carries Iowa Highway 2/Illinois Route 9. This bridge dates from 1927, replacing the former bridge from 1887 (which also carried both rail and road traffic), and is still owned by BNSF today (the highway over the bridge is tolled). The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1999. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate Ektachrome 35mm slide. |
