NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 2 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9601 and two more "AF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9601 is an AF-15 built in July of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. They are pulling a merchandise train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge on their way to Altoona. |
