Description: |
Volkmer. Here is a duplicate 35m color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in East Conemaugh, Pennsylvania, on 14 March 1959. In the foreground is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9604 and several other units of various pedigrees whose road numbers are not recorded. #9604 is an AF-15 built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. All of these units are just idling away, awaiting their next assignments. Several tracks over, a pair of GM-EMD "Covered Wagons" is serving as tail-end pushers for a freight train heading up the west slope of the Allegheny Mountains. Meantime, a trio of GM-EMD "Geeps" is rockon' 'n' rollin' in the opposite direction with a westbound TrucTrain. |
