Here are 16 original photos that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad yard locomotives in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1960. The purpose of the Samuel Rea Shop was to build or rebuild railroad cars of various sorts. When those cars were finished, they were marshaled into trains departing from the Hollidaysburg Yards. Trains destined for parts East would turn right at WYE Tower, merge with the main line at ALTO Tower in Altoona, and proceed from there. Trains destined for parts West would pass by WYE Tower, climb up the mountains via the Muleshoe Curve, merge with the main line just before the tunnels at Gallitzin, and proceed from there; there would often be several pushers on the rear.

This photo was taken at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, just East of the Bedford Street Crossing.

Yard Power. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railroad locomotive at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during July of 1960. Shown here is P&WV engine #40, an AS-616 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in May of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower; it was being leased by the PRR. This photo was taken from the old Union Street Bridge. The crew is moving some "junk" from Sender's into the westbound classification yard. These were the two main tracks in and out of the Hollidaysburg Yards, and they were located about where the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal's basins were situated in the mid-1800's. South Juniata Street is visible on the right. This photo taken from the northern end of the Union Street Bridge.

Shown here is PRR engine #9394, an ES-12 built by EMD in 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. The PRR's Samuel Rea Shop is in the background. Also visible are the wooden water tower (the last vestige of the "Age of Steam") and "Bald Hill" in the far distance.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9329 and #9312. Both are GS-4M switchers built by GE and rated at 380 horsepower each. #9329 was built in 1948, but #9312 was built in 1949. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street.

Shown here is PRR engine #8906, an AS-16M road switcher built by the American Locomotive Company in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. This photo was taken from the old Union Street Bridge. Note the string of H-21A hopper cars a couple of tracks over; they were on their way to the Samuel Rea Shop for rebuilding/reconditioning.

Shown here is PRR engine #5557, a BS-10A switcher built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office, at the very eastern end of South Juniata Street. Note the strings of newly-reconditioned gondola and hopper cars visible on the right. The plume of smoke in the distance originated at the PRR's Reclamation Plant in Frankstown.
