NKP 2-8-4 #763 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
Here is a beautiful example of a Lima 2-8-4 Bershire built in 8/1944 as Nickel Plate Road #763. After retirement, it was put on display for awhile at Wasena Park in Roanoke, VA. In 1976, it was a contender for the motive power for the American Freedom Train but was not chosen. It returned to Roanok to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The loco was eventually sold to Jerry Jacobson for his Age of Steam Roundhouse collection. Currently, it is awaiting restortation. An unknown photographer took the photo. |

NW 2-6-6-4 #1218 - Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
Another historic steam locomotive that the unknown rail fan found at the Virginia Transportation Museum was this massive Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1218. In 1987, this beautiful locomotive sat outside but eventuallhy it was brought into a sheltered area after a renovation. The loco was built not far from this location by the Norfolk & Western Shops in Juen of 1943. The loco served until being reitred from regular revenue service. In 1986, it was restored to be used by NS for the steam excursions between 1987-91. It was finally donated to the Virginia Museum of Transportation for static display. |

U.S. Panama Canal "Mule" #686 |
Description: |
Replacing the original "mules" that pulled the boats through the canal was this GE built Panama Canal "mule". , The locks "mule" was built by GE in Schenectady, NY in 1914 and worked until retirment in 1964.The mule was a "Pacific Locks Mule which operated at the west end of the canal. It is 32' long, 8' wide, and weighs 42 tons with a wheelbase of 12 feet and operates on a track gauge of 5 feet. It was powered by a three-phase, 220-volt, 25-cycle motor geared to traction equipment. The towing capacity of the complete unit was 25,000 pounds. Unknown photographer |

Specs - serial #35034, class SA, 51" drivers, 22x28" cylinders, 200 psi boiler pressure, engine weight of 182,300 lb, tractive effort of 45,200 lb. |
